Catherine's Yearly Festive Musical Celebration Spotlights Community Volunteers

Catherine, Princess of Wales, is presiding over her customary Christmas carol concert at the historic Abbey, with attendees featuring members of the royal family, famous faces, and community champions who have made a difference in their neighbourhoods.

The large audience will listen to a mix of festive songs, musical performances, and spoken word pieces from performers including Kate Winslet and Chiwetel Ejiofor.

Centred Around Love and Generosity

The theme of the service, held in the candle-lit Abbey on Friday afternoon, is kindness and showing love to others.

In the audience are a couple named the Cordiners, whose child passed away from a brain tumour, and who set up a charity, Kayleigh's Wee Stars, to help households where there is a child with a terminal illness.

"The dedication, empathy, and kindness you show, often discreetly and without words, and without any expectation or recognition, make an remarkable change to the lives of others," wrote Catherine in a letter ahead of the festive gathering.

A Gradual Return

The Princess of Wales is continuing her own measured re-emergence to the public eye subsequent to her illness and medical care, last month delivering her initial major address in two years, in which she talked about recognising the "quiet, often invisible work of caring".

Musical Talent and Access

Those coming to the Abbey can listen to young musicians aided by the Future Talent organisation, established in part by the Duchess of Kent to increase availability of instrumental training.

Trumpeter Carys Wood, 18, who is a trumpet player and is from southwest Wales, has been assisted by the trust, with awards contributing to musical instruments, lessons and travel costs - and she said it was "incredible" to be performing at the concert.

"Pursuing music is often costly," Carys said. She is now enrolled at the prestigious music academy, and added that "all people deserve the chance" to develop their musical skills.

A Sisterly Duo

Eliza, Carys's sister who is 11, who performs on the brass instrument, will be present at the Abbey. "It's unbelievable that I get to perform here in front of so many distinguished guests," she said.

Among the guests will be people from various age groups.

That will feature nine-year-old Saphia Turner, recipient of a young hero award, who creates and sells art and completes fundraising tasks to collect donations for community pantries.

Seasonal Ambiance and Entertainment

The Abbey has been adorned with specially made wreaths, with celebrity baker Mary Berry and floral designer Simon Lycett contributing to their design.

The musical lineup includes singer Katie Melua, choristers from Westminster Abbey and a maritime folk band from Cornwall, Fisherman's Friends, who said the chance to take part was "the icing on the cake for us."

The Together at Christmas carol concert will be aired by ITV1 on Christmas Eve.
